Meuser Announces More than $55 Million to Combat Opioid Crisis in Pennsylvania

September 5, 2019

WASHINGTON — Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded Pennsylvania a total of $55,928,733 through the State Opioid Response grant program to combat the opioid epidemic.

This funding will expand access to treatment and significantly improve data collection on drug overdoses to help us better understand the opioid epidemic and how to best assist individuals struggling with Substance Use Disorder. Efforts to expand treatment are working. Data shows that of the 2 million Americans struggling with Substance Use Disorder, over 60% are now receiving medication-assisted treatment. HHS also reported a 5% reduction in drug overdose deaths from 2017 to 2018, as well as a significant reduction in heroin-related opioid use disorder.

"We are committed to doing all we can to fight against the drug epidemic and provide those battling addiction with effective treatment, prevention, and recovery resources," said Meuser. "This new funding will strengthen our community's ability to better understand the epidemic and provide high-quality, coordinated care to Pennsylvanians struggling with addiction."
